Levelling Up works in partnership with productions, institutions, and organisations across the performing arts industry to address gaps in training, preparation, and representation within hair and make-up practice.
Our work focuses on supporting both professionals and performers by improving standards, strengthening confidence, and ensuring teams are properly prepared to work across all hair types.
Textured Hair Intensive Course for Theatre
Breaking Barriers is a fully funded pilot training programme delivered in partnership with the Theatre Artists Fund, designed to support experienced Global Majority hair professionals in transitioning into theatre.
The programme responds to a clear industry gap, where textured hair expertise is underrepresented in theatre and access to structured training remains limited.
What the Programme Covers
Participants are introduced to both the technical and professional realities of backstage work.
This includes:
Working across all hair types
Wig preparation and integration
Backstage practice and workflow
Industry etiquette, speed, and communication
The training is practical, structured, and designed to reflect real production conditions.
Who It’s For
This programme is for experienced professionals working with textured hair who are looking to step into theatre.
This includes:
- Braiders
- Barbers
- Salon-based practitioners
- Private stylists
It is not an entry-level course. Participants must already have experience and be committed to working within theatre environments.
Through this training, professionals are better prepared to step into theatre roles, while productions benefit from more confident, consistent, and well-prepared teams. The programme contributes to improved performer care, stronger working practices, and a wider shift in standards across the industry.
